Does fried food really cause acne and breakouts?

Decadent fried snacks are the ultimate comfort food. Especially in the monsoon or when you are PMS-ing, you really can’t help but reach for a bowl of chips and munch on them till you forget all your worries. But what happens after that? You feel guilty, look at the empty bowl and hope the sinful treat doesn’t show up on your face starring as a pimple. If you have acne-prone skin and get a pimple every time you gobble fried food, you need to read this.

Here is how and why fried food affects your skin and triggers acne, and what you can do about it. Because, obviously you can’t give it up completely (we won’t wish that for anyone).

Why fried food is to be blamed for acne

Swap your fried foods with baked foods

Fried foods like chips, fries, patties and donuts are laden with saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, which make your skin produce more sebum. More oil on your skin results in, you guessed it right, more acne! Also, these high-fat snacks have high salt or sugar content that affect your hormone levels and promote acne development. All in all, fried foods cause your skin to produce oil and, thus, flare-ups. But what is the solution? We might have one and here it is.

Now, you don’t have to give up your fries or donuts or chicken popcorn! What you can do is move to a healthier alternative, which is baked food. Simply swap these fried snacks for healthier, baked versions of them. You can have baked fries and potato chips all you want without worrying about acne. It requires your snacks to have just a light coat of oil to bake, rather than a dip in high-saturated fatty oils.

They are healthier and won’t produce excess oil or mess with your hormones. Opt for healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil to bake and keep uninvited acne at bay. If you are feeling a little extra motivated to eat healthy and achieve clear skin, you could try swapping potatoes for sweet potatoes. No? Let’s just take it one step at a time then.
